The Regimental Badges at Trekkopje in Namibia have been a national monument of Namibia since February 17, 1978 . These are several oversized regimental badges that were created during the First World War by the South African Army using stones laid on the ground according to the model .
Origin and location
The badges were made of stone between April and June 1915 in the final phase of the fighting in what was then German South West Africa by troops of the South African Army . Trekkopje itself is not far from Swakopmund in the Erongo region . A few battalions of South African infantry secured the rail link between Swakopmund and Usakos against possible attacks by the German protection force for South West Africa .
There are some regimental coats of arms or military symbols that can be found between Swakopmund and Trekkopje. The largest badge measures around 30 × 12 meters and shows a crowned hunting horn and the abbreviation "2 DLI" (2nd Battalion, Durban Light Infantry ). Another shows a thistle with a tape that bears the Gaelic inscription "ALBA NAM BUADH" ("Well done, Scotland", the motto of the Transvaal Scottish Regiment ). Today the largest badge can be viewed from a viewing platform.
