The Regius Professor of Geology , (initially Murchison Professor of Geology and Mineralogy ) is a Regius Professorship in Earth Sciences at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. The subject was in Edinburgh from 1770 in the as Regius Professor of Natural History by George III. endowed professorship. The first holder of this chair in natural history was Robert Ramsay . From 1871 the chair of geology continued as an independent professorship . The first holder of this chair was Archibald Geikie . The foundation falls under Queen Victoria's reign .

History of the chair

Archibald Geikie - first Regius Professor of Geology

In 1870, the then head of the British land surveying authority, Roderick Impey Murchison , split the professorship for natural history into a biological and a geological branch. He offered £ 6,000 as a foundation, but insisted on naming the professor himself. The approval of the establishment of the chair was approved by the Treasury , but the appointment clause was excluded. Archibald Geikie, then President of the Edinburgh Geological Society, was elected first professor. At the same time he was a protégé of Murchison, who got his way.

Geikie moved from the professorship to the civil service and became director general of the geological service in Great Britain and in 1891 raised to the nobility. His younger brother James took over the chair and continued it successfully until 1914. He was followed by Thomas John Jehu. In the announcement of this appointment, the professorship is no longer referred to as Murchison Professor, as under the two Geikies, but as Regius Professor of Geology.

The professorship has been part of the School of GeoSciences since 2002.
