The municipality of Reifenberg was an independent municipality in Hesse for a short time from April 1, 1939 to 1945 and again from December 31, 1971 to August 1, 1972 .

1939 to 1945

As part of a regional reform on April 1, 1939, a large number of communities were merged into larger units. Here, Oberreifenberg and Niederreifenberg were combined to form the municipality of Reifenberg. The districts were only officially called "Reifenberg Ost" (Oberreifenberg) and "Reifenberg West" (Niederreifenberg). The government trainee Müller initially acted as mayor. From June 12, 1936, Fritz Heß (born October 8, 1907) ( NSDAP ) was a full-time mayor. In 1945 the community was dissolved and the two previously independent communities rebuilt.

1972

A regional reform in Hesse has been discussed since the mid-1960s . The state government wanted the communities and districts to merge on a voluntary basis. Since this was often not the case, there was also the threat of a state law regulation in the room. In most cases this threat was sufficient, but not in the High Taunus .

In order to protect themselves from unwanted integration into the community of Schmitten im Taunus , the independent communities of Oberreifenberg and Niederreifenberg (then part of the Main-Taunus district ) each unanimously decided in 1971 to merge to form the independent community of Reifenberg on December 31, 1971. With this resolution centuries-old rivalries between neighboring towns were initially put on hold.

Erwin Müller was elected mayor of the municipality of Reifenberg. But he should only have a short term in office. The municipality of Reifenberg with just 1500 households did not correspond to the municipality size desired by the state government. As part of the regional reform in Hesse , a merger of the municipality of Reifenberg with the municipality of Schmitten was therefore ordered by virtue of state law .

The municipality of Reifenberg filed an unsuccessful action against the decision of the Hessian state parliament at the Federal Administrative Court . So it remained with the formation of today's large community Schmitten.

Erwin Müller was replaced by the first mayor of the large community Georg Hahl (CDU). Even today, the contrast between the different parts of the city still shapes municipal politics. There are two free voter communities in the larger community: The FWG, which provided the mayor for many years, has its core in Arnoldshain , the UBB its focus in both Reifenbergs.
