The Hoad Chapel is a path chapel in the Upper Bavarian municipality of Unterammergau . It counts as a field monument in the community and is registered as an architectural monument in the Bavarian list of monuments.

location

The chapel is on the north side of the path that leads from the Unterammergau district of Au along the Engen Laine to the east to the wooded heights between Aufacker and Hörnle . One of the Unterammergau chapel and martial paths leads past the Hoad chapel. To the right and left of the chapel are two large trees that almost hide the chapel from a distance. In front of the chapel there is a wooden bench on a stone slab area.

description

Pieta in the chapel

The chapel dates from the middle of the 19th century. It is a small, rectangular gable roof building in the neo-Gothic style with a trapezoidal end. On the east and west side it has an ogival window, in the south an ogival door, the upper half of which is glazed. A wrought iron grille behind the door protects the chapel against burglary.

Inside, on a small altar, stands an approximately four feet tall Pietà , which is a replica of the original Pietà that was lost through theft. Pictures of Saints Gregorius and Isidorius hang on the sloping walls .

Reindl-Marterl

Directly to the right of the Hoad Chapel is the Reindl-Marterl, a wayside shrine with a memorial plaque for Genoveva Reindl, who was shot there from an American plane in the last days of the Second World War . The memorial plaque shows as a colored wooden relief the image of a woman walking to a tree, and above it a gray airplane on a blue background. A series of dots between the plane and the woman indicate the bullets that are being shot at the woman. The inscription reads: When the Americans marched in on April 29, 1945, Genoveva Reindl was shot here and died of her severe wounds.
