Reinhard Remane (born March 21, 1929 in Kiel ; † April 27, 2009 in Marburg ) was a German biologist and university professor specializing in entomology .

Live and act

Remane was born to Martha and Adolf Remane . He graduated from high school in Plön in 1949 , then studied zoology , botany and chemistry at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel . He received his doctorate with a thesis on "The colonization of grassland areas of various origins by bedbugs and cicadas in the Weser-Ems area", supervised by Wolfgang Tischler . In 1957/58 he worked as a "Foreign Expert of Taxonomy" at the Agricultural Experiment Station Abu Ghraib near Baghdad in Iraq, then as a DFG research fellow in Munich and in 1961/62 as a "Research Officer" at the Hudeiba Research Station with Ed Damer in Sudan .

In 1961 he married Helga geb. Joos. The couple had three children: Karen, Peter and Gudrun.

In December 1962, he initially took on the position of curator at the Biology Department at the Philipps University of Marburg and was appointed university professor in the early 1970s. Scientifically, he mainly devoted himself to the taxonomy , distribution and ecology of European and North African cicadas and bugs . He undertook research trips to southern Europe (Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Greece), North Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia), the Canary Islands and Nepal .

At the end of the 1970s he founded the journal Marburg Entomological Publications. From Volume 1, Issue 1 in 1979 to Volume 3, Issue 3 in 2005, a total of 23 issues of this journal were published.

He wrote about 140 original scientific papers, including 169 initial descriptions of cicada and bug species (including 82 Cicadellidae , 23 Delphacidae , 19 Nabidae , 15 Cixiidae , 11 Issidae ) and described 15 new species of cicada.

honors and awards

His outstanding services in the field of systematics and faunistics have been recognized by the German Society for General and Applied Entomology (DGaaE) with the award of the Meigen Medal.
