Reinhold Braun (actually Emil Paul Reinhold Braun-Eckelsbach ; born on December 10, 1879 in Berlin ; died on December 14, 1959 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German storyteller, poet and author of biographies.

life and work

Braun was the son of a police sergeant. After he had acquired the license to serve as a one-year volunteer , he attended the teachers' seminar in Drossen from 1898 to 1901 , then worked as a teacher first in Grabow near Landsberg an der Warthe , from 1904 in Weißensee near Berlin and from 1906 in Berlin. In 1918 he had to retire from service because of an eye problem. He then worked as a journalist, freelance writer and speaker. Since 1913 he was with Katharina, geb. Löber, married and had two sons by her. After 1945 Braun lived in Lochham near Munich.

Especially during the First World War, Braun showed himself to be a patriotic writer of untiring productivity and unshakable belief in the German cause. After the end of the World War, Braun turned to more contemplative topics, he continued to glorify his homeland, but in a less militarized form, extolled marriage, friendship and other virtues, and was intensely involved in communicating both through his writings and his numerous lectures Joy of life, happiness, encouragement and consolation in the event of strokes of fate and difficult times. Braun was also a traveling speaker for the Association of German Freemasons .

In 1933, Braun struck again more martial tones. From the poem Fliegerkampf from 1934:

Second is life! Second is death!
I am flying through flames.
The engine rustles; the propeller roars
faster and faster. -
Wings and
cables are surrounded by an early shine.
Day and flight so regal!
Eagle carry me! - - - [...]

In addition to his narrative and lyrical works, he wrote a study on Heinrich von Kleist (1911) and biographies of Albert Schweitzer (1956) and Helen Keller (1957).

Remarks

  1. Eligibility for service as a one-year volunteer is a description for secondary school leaving certificate or a comparable school leaving certificate. It seems unclear whether Braun with such a qualification and a 2-year training in a teacher training college, as elsewhere (e.g. Killy), claims that he worked as a high school teacher or was qualified to do so seems unclear.
