Rice (from Arabic رئيس, DMG raʾīs  'Oberhaupt, Chef') is a Turkish film by Hüdaverdi Yavuz. It was originally scheduled to premiere in March 2016. October 18, 2016 was announced as a new date. On February 26, 2017, Erdoğan's 63rd birthday, the film was presented to the public at a gala in Istanbul and was released in Turkish cinemas on March 3. The theatrical release in Germany was on March 2, 2017 and in Austria the day after.

action

The film shows Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's rise to power from a humble background. First, Erdoğan's childhood is shown in Istanbul's Kasımpaşa harbor district in the Beyoğlu district . His position as Mayor of Istanbul from 1994 to 1998 was an important stop. In 1999 he was imprisoned for four months after reading the poem “Democracy is just the train we get on until we get there. The mosques are our barracks, the minarets are our bayonets, the domes are our helmets and the faithful are our soldiers ”. The film ends with the imprisonment.

Reviews

Critics -received rice as glorifying propaganda film . To publish it so shortly before the referendum on the introduction of the controversial presidential system was seen as a targeted propaganda measure. Erdoğan actor Beyoğlu vehemently denied this and said that the film, which had been completed a long time ago, had not been released earlier because the intention was to give Erdoğan a special birthday present with the film. When asked whether the film shows any weaknesses of Erdoğan, Beyoğlu replied: "He has no weaknesses!"

The film has not been very successful in Turkish cinemas so far. It has very poor ratings in the Internet Movie Database , at times it was even listed as the worst film of all time.

In July 2017, the film's producer, Ali Avcı , was arrested by police at his home in Istanbul on charges of having ties to the Gülen movement . The trailer for the new film Uyanış (“Awakening”), which he directed himself, had appeared shortly before . The film, which hypothetically discusses the consequences of the success of the coup attempt in Turkey in 2016, had caused outrage in Turkey, among other things because members of the Erdogan family were killed in it and, in one scene, Erdogan was worshiping a pistol the head is held.
