The private brewery Heinrich Reissdorf GmbH & Co KG is the producer of the top-selling Kölsch brand Reissdorf Kölsch .

history

Headquarters of the brewery on Severinstrasse (around 1900)

On September 4, 1894, the uniform tailor Heinrich Reissdorf founded the top-fermenting brewery Heinrich Reissdorf . After the founder's death in 1901, his wife Gertrud took over sole management, which she handed over to her sons in 1908. Before the First World War , the annual output was 15,000 hectoliters. After the World War, the brewery had to switch from steam boilers to operation with electricity , as hard coal was hardly available as an energy source due to the occupation of the Ruhr by France . The designation top-fermented in the company name was dropped in 1923 when the product range was expanded to include Pils , Märzen and Export . In 1936, Reissdorf was the first brewery to bottle Kölsch.

In World War II, the brewery was destroyed to 90%, but one was already on July 15, 1945 when Reisdorf draft beer with 6% original wort are brewed. In the British occupation zone, the production of full beer was not allowed in the post-war years. From August 12, 1949, full beer with an original wort of 12% was again produced as Pils, Export and Kölsch.

With the targeted marketing campaign “Echt Kölsch” by the Cologne brewers at the beginning of the economic miracle , Kölsch became the most popular beer in the greater Cologne area, so that Reissdorf continuously concentrated on Kölsch production. Some Cologne brewers initially waited for the Kölsch boom to develop and had their Kölsch produced in the Lohnbrau near Reissdorf. In March 1986 Reissdorf signed the Kölsch Convention together with the 23 other companies organized in the Cologne Brewery Association and was thus still entitled to produce Kölsch.

Since the old brewery in Severinsviertel could no longer be expanded, production and bottling were gradually relocated to Rodenkirchen from 1998 to 2002 . The former production facility, a four-story building with several basement levels, was completely demolished. The brewery at the corner of Severinstrasse and An St. Magdalenen, which was then attached , no longer exists. A new brewery was built at the old location in Severinsviertel (Severinstrasse 51) and opened on June 2, 2009 under the name "Zum alten Brauhaus".

The geographical conditions of the new location required special technical features. Due to the proximity to the industrial site Wesseling , the groundwater of the first level is qualitatively unsuitable for brewing beer, which is why an 80 meter deep well was drilled to the second groundwater level. Thanks to extensive treatment without chemical additives, the water is of drinking water quality. Since the Rodenkirchen district is not connected to the Cologne-Stammheim sewage treatment plant, the wastewater is diverted to the smaller Wesseling treatment plant, which has capacity problems. Therefore, the brewery is only allowed to discharge a limited amount of wastewater per hour. For the production of 1 hectolitre of beer, about 7 hectoliters of water are normally required. The process water is fed into a cycle at Reissdorf and used several times, which means that the amount of waste water has been significantly reduced. The spent grains that arise during the brewing process are given to agricultural operations, which is why the company has to be certified according to ISO 9001 as a feed manufacturer on a regular basis .

In addition to Reissdorf-Kölsch (4.8 % vol. And 11.8 ° original wort), the brewery has been producing Reissdorf alcohol-free (less than 0.5% vol.) Since January 2010 . Since the brewing process for this product is interrupted before fermentation , this drink may not be named Kölsch according to the Kölsch Convention. The production of other types of beer was discontinued in the past. Reissdorf-Kölsch is bottled in 0.33 l and 0.5 l longneck bottles. Up to 100,000 bottles per hour can be filled in the filling process. Since 1992 Reissdorf has only used keg kegs in sizes 10, 20, 30 and 50 l for draft beer . 5 liter and 0.5 liter cans are also filled.

The beer production in 2011 was 635,000 hectoliters, the proportion of bottled beer was 80%. According to the brewery, the sales area of Reissdorf-Kölsch is limited to 100 km around the factory chimney.

Advertising (1991)

Reissdorf does without extensive advertising in the press, radio and television. The company relies on transport advertising as well as lighting advertising at the points of sale of the product.

The brewery in Cologne on Aachener Strasse has been advertising since 1968 with a movable neon sign in which a man raises a glass of Kölsch to his mouth at a 90 degree angle. When the glass is emptied, the male's body fills with Kölsch, represented by the lighting of neon tubes from bottom to top. The advertisement alternates between a male and a female person. As a landmark of Cologne, it is now a listed building .

Since the company delivers two to three series of artistically designed beer coasters with motifs from the city of Cologne every year, these are popular collector's items. The Koelsch sticks from Reissdorf differ from those of other Koelsch brands in that they have a thicker glass base, which ensures greater stability.
