Rembrandt's graphic world
The exhibition Rembrandt's graphic world. Experiment. Competition. Virtuosity took place from October 3, 2019 to January 12, 2020 at the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum & Fondation Corboud in Cologne . The occasion of the exhibition was the 350th anniversary of the death of the Dutch painter and etcher Rembrandt van Rijn on October 4, 2019. It was the first Rembrandt exhibition of the year in Cologne, shortly before the exhibition shown from November 1, 2019 to March 1, 2020 Inside Rembrandt • 1606–1669 .
exhibition
The exhibition comprised 30 etchings by Rembrandt, mostly from the holdings of the graphic collection of more than 65,000 sheets of the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum & Fondation Corboud , plus some loans from other museums and from private collections. The focus of both Rembrandt's graphic work and the exhibition was formed by scenes from the Bible in which people enter into dialogue or are depicted in moments of examination or knowledge. Further works showed how the artist explored the self in self-portraits and worked on the closeness to nature in his landscapes around Amsterdam.
In addition to Rembrandt's etchings, the presentation also included some prints by his predecessors and contemporaries such as Albrecht Dürer , Lucas van Leyden and Jacques Callot , who influenced Rembrandt artistically or competed with him. Others, such as Giovanni Castiglione with a portrait in the style of Rembrandt, Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich with his Great Healing of the Ill based on Rembrandt's Hundertguldenblatt and Max Beckmann's etching Jacob Wrestles with the Angel , were inspired by Rembrandt or tried to measure themselves against him.
