Life

Kaplan grew up in the Anatolian village of Bahadın near Yozgat . His parents were caretakers, and Kaplan worked as a messenger and seller of vegetables as a schoolchild. His parents went to Germany as guest workers and had their son, who was now living with his grandparents, join them in the early 1970s.

Kaplan married in 1977. His son and two daughters work for his company.

Companies

Initially, Kaplan ran snack bars in West Berlin . After the reunification , Kaplan expanded with his kebab shops in the eastern part of the city . In 1991 he and his brother opened their first own meat factory. This was followed by production in the Netherlands Zevenaar (1994), Hamburg (1996), Schönwalde (1999) and Berlin (2001). In July 2004, Kaplan and a Polish partner opened a kebab shop for Poland in Stettin . Since 2007 he has been the largest kebab producer in the EU . In Berlin alone it supplies around 1000 snack bars. His company is represented on the board of the Association of Turkish Doner Kebab Manufacturers in Europe ATDID.

The Berlin press describes Kaplan as the "King of Döner" or "Kebab King".

Rotten meat scandal

Following a complaint from a customer who complained of nausea after eating, around four tons of unsuitable meat were seized from Kaplan's facility in September 2006. In 2007, Kaplan announced a charge of defamation against the prosecutor's spokesman who had mentioned his name in connection with disgusting meat. He referred to his efforts for a "transparent production" and his efforts to introduce a kebab quality seal. Kaplan contradicted the presumption of an official veterinarian that a rotisserie manufacturer involved in the rotten meat scandal might not have recognized the poor quality of the meat: "You can see and smell something like that".

In September 2007, Kaplan campaigned in the Hürriyet to publish the names of the kebab manufacturers supplied with rotten meat in 2007 and defended himself against rotten meat allegations.

In 2008 the public prosecutor's office brought charges of “placing on the market of unsuitable food”. On May 15, 2008 the Berlin-Tiergarten District Court sentenced Kaplan to a fine of 40,000 euros (400 daily rates of 100 euros each). A second charge of mislabeling the composition and origin of the meat has been dropped.
