René Bloch (Judaist)

René Sigmund Bloch (born July 28, 1969 in Aarau ) is a Swiss Judaist and classical philologist .

Life

He obtained his Maîtrise de Lettres Classiques from the University of Paris IV in 1994 and his Lic.phil. in Latin , Greek and Old Testament studies at the University of Basel and in 1999 the Dr. phil. in Latin Philology in Basel , where he qualified as a professor in 2008 in Classical Philology and Jewish Studies . From 1996 to 1999 he was a research assistant for Latin at the Department of Classical Philology at the University of Basel. As a visiting scholar , he conducted research from 1998 to 1999 at the University of California, Santa Barbara (Department of Religious Studies). From 1999 to 2001 he was a Research Associate and Lecturer at Princeton University (Classics Department). From 2001 to 2003 he was Visiting Assistant Professor in the Classics Department and Program in Jewish Studies at Trinity College (Connecticut) . From 2003 to 2004 he was at the University of Basel, Seminar for Classical Philology and Université de Neuchâtel , Institut des Sciences de l'Antiquité classique: Lecturer / chargé d'enseignement. At the Université de Lausanne , Faculté de Théologie, he was Premier Assistant / Fonds national suisse de la recherche scientifique from 2004 to 2006 . From 2005 to 2008 he was at the University of Bern , Interfaculty Research Center for Jewish Studies: Lecturer (from 2005), Assistant (from 2006/2007) and Senior Assistant (2008). Since spring 2008 he has been teaching in Bern , Faculty of Theology, and since 2010 also in the Institute for Classical Philology of Phil.-Hist. Faculty as associate professor for Jewish studies with a focus on ancient and medieval Judaism. In the fall semester of 2012, he conducted research at Columbia University at the Classics Department and Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies as a visiting scholar / fellow . In 2015 he was appointed full professor for Jewish studies with a focus on ancient and medieval Judaism. In spring semester 2017 he was at Harvard University at the Center for Jewish Studies Harry Starr Fellow in Judaica .

His main research interests are the history and literature of Judaism, from the Hellenistic to the rabbinical period, interrelations between Jewish and pagan culture, Jewish-Hellenistic literature, v. a. Flavius ​​Josephus and Philon of Alexandria , ancient mythologies (Israel, Greece, Rome) and ancient ethnography.
