Rainer Christoph Schwinges

Rainer Christoph Schwinges (born February 19, 1943 in Paderborn ) is a German-Swiss historian .

Rainer Schwinges grew up in Cologne and graduated from the Humboldt Gymnasium in Cologne in 1963 . This was followed by military service and a stay abroad. From the summer semester 1966 to the winter semester 1973/74 he studied history, sociology, philosophy and psychology at the Universities of Cologne , Münster and Gießen . From 1968 to 1973 he was a scholarship holder of the Albertus Magnus Association of the Archdiocese of Cologne and the promotion of young talent from the State of Hesse. In 1974 he was in Giessen with the work initiated and supervised by Hans-Dietrich Kahl , Crusade ideology and tolerance. PhD studies on Wilhelm von Tire . From 1974 to 1977 he was a research assistant in a project of the German Research Foundation (DFG) on the emergence of European nations in the Middle Ages in Giessen, Prague and Basel. From 1977 to 1988 he was an assistant in Giessen. 1985 followed there with the treatise German University Visitors in the 14th and 15th Centuries. Studies on the social history of the old empire the habilitation with Peter Moraw . This was followed by teaching activities as a private lecturer and substitute professor at the universities of Gießen, Osnabrück and Bielefeld . From 1989 to 1992 Rainer Schwinges taught as an associate professor and since 1992 as a full professor for general history of the Middle Ages at the University of Bern . He was Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and History and until 2001 Senator of the University of Bern. In 2003 he became a university councilor of the Karl-Franzens-University Graz . In the summer of 2008 he retired. A conference was dedicated to him on the occasion of his retirement. The aim of the conference was to “question the idea of ​​the Middle Ages as a time of stagnation”. The contributions to the conference were published in 2010 by Christian Hesse and Klaus Oschema .

His research interests are the social and constitutional history as well as the history of ideas and culture of the high and late Middle Ages, in particular the history of the crusades, cities and migration as well as the history of universities, education and science in the Middle Ages and modern times. Among other things, Schwinges is a member of the Academy of Charitable Sciences in Erfurt (since 1995), of the Constance Working Group for Medieval History (since 1998) and a full member of the historical commission at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences (since 1999). He is editor of the publications of the Society for the History of Universities and Science . Schwinges is director of the Repertorium Academicum Germanicums (RAG) together with Christian Hesse .

He is married and has a daughter.
