The Rappenhof winery in Alsheim im Wonnegau is a winery in the German wine-growing region of Rheinhessen .

history

The main building of the Rappenhof winery

Vines have been grown and wines have been cultivated in the company since 1604. Like many companies in Rheinhessen, it was originally a mixed operation. The winery is a member of the Association of German Predicate and Quality Wineries . Klaus Muth, the current owner of the Rappenhof, is deputy to the regional chairman of the Prädikatsweingüter Rheinhessen Philipp Wittman.

His father, Reinhard Muth (1931–2015), was President of the Rheinhessen Viticulture Association for seven years and President of the German Viticulture Association for 17 years. Most recently he was the first AREV Vice-President. AREV (Assemblée des Régions Européenes Viticoles) is the professional representation of the assembly of the wine-growing regions of Europe.

Grape variety mirror

Mainly (75%) grape varieties for white wine production are grown on around 52 hectares of vineyards. With a share of 40% of the total vineyard area, Riesling is the dominant grape variety . The proportion of Burgundy varieties including Chardonnay has increased from 14% to 40% over the last 25 years. The remaining 20% are divided between Silvaner , Müller-Thurgau , Gewürztraminer and smaller proportions of other grape varieties. As a specialty, a Blauer Portugieser is made from vines that are over 70 years old.

Locations

Vineyards are cultivated in the Nierstein area of the Rheinbruch, partly in steep-slope viticulture :

  • Alsheim: Fischerpfad, Frühmesse, Goldberg, Römerberg and Sonnenberg
  • Guntersblum: Kreuzkapelle, Steinberg, Himmelthal, Bornpfad and Eiserne Hand
  • Ludwigshöhe: devil's head
  • Dienheim: Silius fountain, cross and table stone
  • Oppenheim: Sackträger and Herrenberg
  • Nierstein: Pettenthal and Ölberg

Vinification

The annual debut wine based on the “Beaujolais nouveau” model is fermented on the mash and bottled shortly after harvest. The white wines are cold fermented to preserve the fruity taste and smell components as much as possible. In order to add further flavor components and to round off the aroma spectrum, the barrique is used to develop part of the harvest . With its barrique-aged Chardonnay, the Rappenhof was a pioneer in the expansion of white wines in small oak barrels. Our own sparkling wine is produced using traditional bottle fermentation. The winery produces around 300,000 bottles of wine a year.

Memberships, associations and awards

The winery is a member of the VDP and belongs to the German Barrique Forum winegrowers' association, until 2005 the only winery in Rhineland-Hesse. In recent years the estate has received the following honors and awards (no claim to completeness):

  • Recommendation of the international wine magazine "Wein-Gourmet" for 2008
  • The magazine "Wein-Gourmet" (issue 26/2002) lists the Rappenhof in the category: "The best wineries in Germany"
  • In a blind tasting, Harper's Magazine determined the highest number of points for a wine from the Alsheim winery in the Niersteiner Pettenthal
  • The magazine "Alles über Wein" even counts the Rappenhof among its selection of the "Best Wineries in the World"
