René Gerónimo Favaloro (born July 14, 1923 in La Plata , † July 29, 2000 in Buenos Aires ) was an Argentine heart surgeon .

Life

The son of a carpenter and a seamstress from the Argentine province worked for ten years in various American institutions, including the Cleveland Clinic , where he specialized in thoracic surgery .

In May 1967, at the Cleveland Clinic, he performed the first successful cardiac bypass operation on a 51-year-old patient . This operation is often referred to as the first “aortocoronary bypass operation”, although, according to Favaloro, it was the interposition of a vein segment with two end-to-end anastomoses . Only the 15th bypass operation, also carried out in 1967, was an "aortocoronary" with a venous bypass from the aorta to the coronary artery .

Favaloro later returned to his homeland, where he built up a cardiological-surgical foundation under his name. Due to the economic crisis that occurred in 1998 , the foundation went into debt with more than 18 million US dollars, whereupon Favaloro shot himself at the age of 77. His wife Maria A. Delgado died in 1998. The marriage had remained childless.
