René Roemersma (* 27. March 1958 ) is a retired Dutch , left anti- apartheid - activists and gained international press attention as the only member convicted and alleged leader of the Dutch terrorist group " Revolutionary Anti-Racist Action (RaRa)" .

Act

Roemersma was arrested in Amsterdam on April 11, 1988 , and charged with being linked to the RaRa attacks. The RaRa attacks are a series of arson attacks on the Dutch-German supermarket chain Makro , branches of Forbo Holding and Shell petrol stations. The aim of these attacks was to induce the relevant companies to withdraw from South Africa and thus to set an example in the fight against the imperialist system , which is maintaining the apartheid regime in South Africa due to political and economic interests. This strategy was successful at both Makro and Forbo. Roemersma was arrested along with 7 other suspects and a little later sentenced to 5 years imprisonment, among other things for arson . On appeal, the Amsterdam court ruled that the evidence used in the original verdict was illegally obtained. As a result, his sentence was reduced to 18 months.

From 2005 to 2006 Roemersma worked at the Panos Institute in Paris for which he attended the OECD conference Deepening Voice and Accountability to Fight Poverty: a Dialogue of Communication Implementers on May 30 and 31, 2006 . In 2006 he worked for NiZA (Dutch Institute for South Africa ) and as an observer of the 2006 election in the Congo . Together with Jolien Schure, he then published the book Verkiezingen in Congo, over loze beloftes en tellen tot diep in de Nacht ( elections in the Congo, about false promises and counting late into the night ). In 2007 he was involved in setting up the Latin American radio network "ALER" in Ecuador . The aim was to increase the population's participation in democracy through improved communication.
