René Straub's work is somewhere between art and design. He is particularly interested in the formation of patterns and the question of the connection between surface and identity. In this context, large-format sample pictures were created on the one hand, the motifs of which were continued on fabrics, wallpaper or carpets. On the other hand, there were considerations on the connection between thinking and interior design - exemplified by Friedrich Schiller and Friedrich Nietzsche - which were published several times and led to lectures at the Weimar Classic Foundation and at Elmau Castle .

With Heidi Straub he founded the manufacture of fine shirts in 1986 , whose collections were developed according to artistic criteria and sold through fashion stores. In this way, by spreading the pattern, a contribution to art in public space was created that was distributed among many carriers . The Museum für Gestaltung Zürich presented this project in 1995 in a solo exhibition that was taken over by the Musée de la Chemiserie in Argenton-sur-Creuse , France, and permanently integrated into the collection there.

With the Austrian artist Ella Raidel, Straub realized some video works and silkscreen pictures under the project name framerec from 2000, the starting point of which was the unplanned changes to surfaces in cities.

René Straub designed most of the posters as well as all publications for ABR Stuttgart and all issues of the META magazine, which Ute Meta Bauer published for the Künstlerhaus Stuttgart . His best-known work is the video loop Umsonst ist die Tod from 2004, which was acquired by the Stuttgart Art Museum .
