René Strien (born April 3, 1953 in Solingen ) is a German publisher , translator and editor .

Career

After graduating from high school in Schwertstrasse, René Strien studied law for four semesters and then German and Romance languages ​​at the universities in Cologne and Madrid . He graduated with honors in 1981. In 1982 a research grant at the University of Madrid followed. From 1984 to 1988 he was a research assistant at the International Office of the University of Cologne (responsible for international exchange programs) and at the same time a lecturer at the Hispanic Institute at the University of Cologne and at the Gummersbach University of Applied Sciences.

From 1989 to 1993 René Strien worked as an editor and editor at Lübbe Verlag . In 1994 he first became program director and managing director of Rütten & Loening in Berlin, from 1998 for the entire Aufbau Verlag , and from 2008 to 2014 he was the publishing director of the newly named Aufbau Verlag. René Strien first came to Rütten & Loening to rebuild the entertainment program, which succeeded with bestsellers such as “Die Päpstin” by Donna W. Cross, a book that was number 1 on the paperback bestseller list for 129 weeks in a row sold over 6 million times. Strien had discovered the manuscript at an agency in Zurich and acquired the rights for a small amount because he was convinced of the commercial success for the publishing house Rütten & Loening, which he repositioned. One of the main focuses of his publishing activities during construction was the modern classics. Successful first and new editions include the reconstructed original versions of Brigitte Reimann's “ Franziska Linkerhand ” (1998), Werner Bräunig's “Rummelplatz” (2007) and Hans Fallada's “ Everyone dies for himself ” (2011): Fallada's last novel was in his The unabridged original version was on the Spiegel bestseller list for a total of 46 weeks , led to a reassessment of the author in Germany and the world and set off a whole wave of rediscoveries on the German market. In 2013 he also obtained an imprint for young German literature on Aufbau with the Blumenbar publishing house . a. From 2008 to 2016 René Strien was a member of the Academy of the German Book Prize and from 2012 to 2016 chairman of the AG Public Publishers in the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels. René Strien has been a literary translator from Spanish, English and French since 1981 (e.g. for Suhrkamp , Kiepenheuer & Witsch , Fischer ).

Since 2018 he has been managing director of the OKAPI publishing house.
