Renate Schmidgall
Renate Schmidgall (* 1955 in Heilbronn ) is a German translator from Polish .
Life
Schmidgall studied Slavic and German in Heidelberg . From 1984 to 1990 she worked as a librarian at the German Poland Institute in Darmstadt, from 1990 to 1996 as a research assistant there. Since then she has been a freelance translator for Polish literature. The best-known authors she has translated so far are: Stefan Chwin , Witold Gombrowicz , Paweł Huelle , Mirosław Nahacz , Maciej Niemiec , Andrzej Stasiuk , Wisława Szymborska and Adam Zagajewski . Renate Schmidgall lives in Darmstadt .
Awards
- In 2001 she received the Jane Scatcherd Prize of the Heinrich Maria Ledig-Rowohlt Foundation for her work and in 2006 the European Translator Prize Offenburg .
- In 2009 she was awarded the Karl Dedecius Prize together with Ryszard Wojnakowski .
- 2017: Johann Heinrich Voß Prize for Translation .
