Renate Vincken (born August 26, 1943 in Leeuwarden ; † April 23, 2013 in Deventer ) was a Dutch visual artist who was best known for her sculptures in public spaces and her work as a ceramist .

life and work

She studied at the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten te Arnhem and the Gerrit Rietveld Academie , among others with Ben Guntenaar . In 1966 she completed her studies as a sculptor and has worked as a freelance artist in Deventer since 1968. By participating in the International Summer Academy for Fine Arts Salzburg in 1974, she learned the technique of bronze casting from Giacomo Manzù and in 1978, thanks to a scholarship, attended the Ceramic Factory Heusden (today: Sundaymorning @ ekwc). She took a course on plastics at the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research in Delft.

In the 1970s and 1980s she created large-format works in Deventer, such as a ceramic wall relief in the former police station, which was secured when the building was later demolished, and a classroom in the Dr. Voorthuizenschool with colored brick. The cast concrete fountain sculpture in front of the main entrance of the Etty Hillesum Lyceum in Deventer was created in 1970.

In 1975 she created the fountain sculpture Fontein met twee zitbanken from French natural stone, originally for the counter hall of the Rabobank in Deventer . The sculpture was later placed in the hall of the Christelijke Scholengemeenschap Revius Deventer before it found its final place in 2009 in front of the administration building of the Etty Hillesum Lyceum on Laan Van Borgele. For the Deventer district of Pothoofd, she designed ceramic reliefs on the residential buildings. Orders all over the Netherlands followed.

Her works are characterized by a wide variety of materials such as ceramics, natural and brick, fiberglass, concrete, bronze and wood. During the planning, Vincken took into account the existing architecture and future use, for example in a project in Buiten Noordenberg , a district in the old town of Deventer, in which the design of the pavement, seating, play objects for children, murals and traffic-regulating elements formed an overall concept .

Vincken's works have been represented in group exhibitions since 1970, and from 1990 also in solo exhibitions, in addition to the Netherlands in Copenhagen, Antwerp, London, Michigan (USA) and Vaasa . She was artist in residence in Michigan and at the Canberra School of Art in Australia .

In addition to her artistic work, she taught at the Werkschuit te Amsterdam and at adult education centers. Renate Vincken, who had been ill for a long time, died at home on April 23, 2013, her grave is in the cemetery in Leeuwarden.
