Development of resources with authority data in archives and libraries

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Resource indexing with authority data in archives and libraries ( RNAB ) for personal, family, corporate archives and collections is a library set of rules for cataloging holdings of private origin. It represents the first application profile for special materials for the Resource Description and Access (RDA) library standard in German-speaking countries.

background

In 1997, the rules for the indexing of estates and autographs (RNA), which had been drawn up on behalf of the German Research Foundation (DFG) by the subcommittee for estate indexing, were established as the standard in the German-speaking area for indexing estates and manuscripts of private origin. The rules for alphabetical cataloging in academic libraries (RAK-WB) served as the basis for the set of rules . The Berlin State Library - Prussian Cultural Heritage and the Austrian National Library signed a cooperation agreement in 2010 for the editorial maintenance of the RNA, which appeared in a revised version as an online publication that same year. A correction in 2015 was only a temporary measure.

The decision of the institutions represented in the standardization committee of the German National Library (DNB) to implement the Resource Description and Access (RDA) library standard in the German-speaking area had far-reaching consequences for RNA. In 2014, KOOP-LITERA international decided to completely redesign the RNA on the basis of the RDA. At that time, a third partner institution, the Swiss National Library, joined the editorial team. In January 2019, the standardization committee approved the new set of rules.

Responsibilities

The RNAB editorial team is composed of employees from the Austrian National Library, the Swiss National Library and the Berlin State Library - Prussian Cultural Heritage. The following institutions were represented in the RNAB working group of the standardization committee: Bayerische Staatsbibliothek ; German National Library, Exile Archive; German Literature Archive Marbach ; Estate Processing Commission of the Association of Austrian Librarians ; Saxon State Library - State and University Library Dresden ; Saxon State Archives ; Association of Austrian Archivists ; Association of Manuscripts - Archives - Legacies eV, Basel University Library .

Basics

In addition to RDA, DACS, EAD and ISAD (G) served as the basis for developing the RNAB. The working group also drew inspiration from the library and archival metadata models Library Reference Model (LRM) and Records in Contexts (RiC).

Target groups and areas of application

RNAB is aimed at all institutions that store and record collections of private origin. The aim of the set of rules is "to be easily understandable instructions even for those who do not have library or archival training." Although the focus is on non-official collections, the set of rules can also be applied to so-called official archives.

Authority data and controlled vocabulary

The use of authority data from the Common Authority File (GND), ISO norms or controlled vocabularies is required for numerous categories of descriptions .

construction

The guideline defines essential terminology and provides general guidelines for the practical handling of stocks (determining and organizing / recording). The 22 rules are enriched with numerous clear examples from library and archive contexts. The appendix includes: a. controlled vocabularies and a detailed glossary .
