The Stadt Dresden restaurant was a restaurant in the low-rise building ensemble of the winter garden high-rise in Leipzig . After the political change, the functional building was demolished in 2004/2005. The residential building, which is one of the tallest in Germany, is now a listed building .

History and architecture

The Stadt Dresden restaurant was opened on August 2, 1974, and its furnishings artfully combined Saxon tradition and the present. The opening was made by Karl-Heinz Müller , Lord Mayor of Leipzig, and Managing Director Thomas Schaufuss.

There was a milk and mocha ice cream bar on the ground floor. The color designers had kept the guest room energetic, warm and all in red and white. 88 guests found space in the innovative milk bar, which was unique for Leipzig in the 1970s, and could enjoy international drinks.

On the upper floor, accessible through a sweeping spiral staircase, there was a life-size antique sandstone sculpture in the foyer , which, referring to the Leipzig trade, represented the Greek god Hermes . From the round hall bar with its 35 seats you had a wonderful view of the main train station and the opera house. The socialist shortage economy was reflected in the lighting concept.

Restaurant with wall painting

The restaurant with 220 seats had a nine-part wall design by the Saxon painter and graphic artist Karl-Heinz Schmidt , who artistically implemented the tradition and modernity of the city of Dresden . Several sandstone copies of putti , the originals of which are in the baroque palace gardens of Oberlichtenau , gave the restaurant a certain "Dresden aura".

Immediately on the outer wall next to the milk bar was a marble relief wall by the Leipzig artist Hans-Joachim Förster . It represented the symbol of the wheel in relation to road traffic, technology and science. The various types of marble were imported from the Soviet Union and Hungary .

The core competence of the restaurant business should lie in the upscale gastronomy , clear seating and the clear arrangement of the traffic areas contributed to the optimization of the holistic concept. A novelty, however, was the use of the restaurant at lunchtime, where 600 employees and students from the surrounding companies had to be fed. The municipal politicians had defined this hybrid function as part of their economic and social policy in the GDR , as there was a lack of capacities in communal catering.
