Anders Retzius Medal
The Anders Retzius Medal ( Swedish Anders Retzius medalj ) is an award given between 1913 and 2013 by the Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography . It was donated by Anna Hierta-Retzius in 1910 and is named after her father-in-law, the anatomist and anthropologist Anders Retzius .
A representative of anthropology or human geography was honored . The award took place in the years in which the society did not award the Vega Medal intended for physiogeographers , so that these three departments were represented alternately. The medal was presented by the King of Sweden on April 24th , the anniversary of the return of Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld in 1880 after driving the Northeast Passage for the first time . In 2015, however, the society decided not to award the medal anymore due to Retzius' role in race research . Lesley Head , who should actually be awarded this, received the Vega Medal instead.
This award should not be confused with a medal from the Swedish Medical Society ( Svenska Läkaresällskapet ), also named after Anders Retzius .
