Doreen Massey (2012)

Doreen Barbara Massey (born January 3, 1944 in Manchester , England - † March 11, 2016 ) was a British geographer and social scientist . Until her death she was Professor Emeritus of Geography at the Open University in Milton Keynes .

Life

After earning a bachelor's degree in geography from the University of Oxford , Massey initially did not pursue a university career path, but worked at the government- affiliated Think Tank Center for Environmental Studies until its closure in 1980 . In 1972 she obtained a master’s degree at the University of Pennsylvania , at that time the most important location for regional scientific research, but she did not follow the economic-mathematical approach of this in her further research. Although she never had a PhD, Massey became a professor at the Open University in 1982 , where she stayed until her retirement in 2009. Doreen Massey died in March 2016 at the age of 72.

Massey is regarded as the most cited human geographer and, among other things, played a decisive role in shaping the emergence of feminist geography , the theoretical-conceptual convergence of human geography and sociology, and the debates about the emerging globalization from the late 1970s onwards.
