Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping is a film by the director and producer couple Dietmar Post and Lucía Palacios , shot between 2000 and 2001 in New York City .
content
The documentary accompanies Reverend Billy , who is actually called Bill Talen and is an actor and performance artist, on his “shopping interventions of stop shopping” in New York City, where he “missionaries” in cafeterias, Disney shops and other public places of consumption. The opponent of globalization combines ideas of social and political change with various concepts of street theater in his work. What Talen calls “entering an imaginary room” is, however, only illegal entry into someone else's property for the police, and so many of Talen's actions end in prison. But the Reverend is convinced that social change begins with civil disobedience.
Dietmar Post and Lucía Palacios observed the political theater maker in the tradition of direct cinema for a year with their camera.
Reviews
“The documentation is just as raw, rough and uncomplicated as the street theater of this rebellious troupe, comes without any comment and conveys a lot of the shrewd resistance people's attitude towards life. Which also includes the fact that they sometimes find themselves a bit embarrassed - an anarchist foreign body in everyday life in the big city, as if from a wilder time. "
