Reverianus von Autun († 273 ) was allegedly the 3rd bishop of Augustodunum ( Autun ) in the Roman occupied Gaul . It belongs to the group of "head carriers" ( cephalophores ).

Vita

According to tradition, was Reverianus Italian descent and was Pope I. Felix sent (268-274) as the leader of a small band of missionaries to Gaul to in today's Burgundy resident Haedui to Christianize. According to the Martyrology of Usuards († 877), written about 500 years later , Emperor Aurelian (r. 270-275) found out about his efforts on an inspection tour through the area around Sens and left him with his companions at the gates of the city of Augustodunum (or with Saint-Révérien ).

Adoration

Of his mortal remains, only a piece of his skull remains, which is kept in the church of Villy-le-Moutier (Burgundy). According to the local tradition of Saint-Révérien, after the Edict of Tolerance of Milan (313), a chapel was built over the tomb of the martyrs , which centuries later became a priory of the Cluny Abbey . In the regional tradition, he was long considered the patron saint against drought .

Medieval representations of the saint are unknown. The few modern portraits show him as a head-supported bishop.
