Rexhep Qosja

Rexhep Qosja (born June 25, 1936 in Vusanje near Gusinje , Kingdom of Yugoslavia , now Montenegro ) is a Kosovar-Albanian writer, literary and cultural scientist.

Life

Rexhep Qosja studied Albanology at the University of Pristina, where he received his doctorate in 1971. After completing his doctorate, he became head of the Institute for Albanology, which he held until 1981. Today he is a member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Kosovo .

Rexhep Qosja wrote numerous essays, poems and stories. In many of his works he addresses national and political issues. His novel Death lies in such eyes is counted among the most outstanding works of contemporary Albanian literature.

During the 1990s Qosja was involved in the League for Human Rights and in the defense against anti-Albanian actions by Serbs in Kosovo. Since then he has also been in favor of the formation of an Albanian state that should encompass the entire Albanian settlement area. Recently, his controversy with the writer Ismail Kadare about the cultural identity of the Albanian people has drawn attention among Albanians . While Kadare considers the Albanians to be an exclusively Western nation and characterized Islam as un-Albanian , Qosja takes an integrative standpoint. The Albanians are equally shaped by the traditions of the West and the Orient. Today Qosja lives in Pristina .
