The Mellrichstadt – Fladungen railway line (also known as the Streutalbahn ) is a branch line in Bavaria . In the upper Streutal it connects Mellrichstadt in Lower Franconia with the town of Fladungen in the Rhön .
history
Since the beginning of 1892, the construction of a railway line was increasingly discussed, which should ensure better transport connections to the Rhön . In previous years, this was already called for by various parties. On November 5, 1892, the responsible district council decided to take over part of the land acquisition costs, whereupon in 1893 the necessary surveying work could be carried out. However, the construction was delayed for political reasons. It was not until September 1895 that a state treaty between the Kingdom of Bavaria and the Duchy of Saxony-Weimar could be concluded, which was necessary because a short part (approx. 5 km) of the route was outside of Bavarian territory. In December 1895, a bill for the construction of the line was introduced into the Bavarian state parliament, which was adopted by the responsible committee at the end of February 1896 and on March 18, 1896 by the majority of the MPs. On May 1, the Chamber of Reich Councilors also gave its approval. In August 1896, the detailed project planning began, whereupon work on the railway began in January 1898, which was completed in December 1898. The technical test drive took place on December 20, 1898. A week later, on December 27, 1898, the railway line, built as the Mellrichstadt – Fladungen local line, was officially opened. From December 28, 1898, the line began operating according to schedule. Passenger traffic ended on the 1976 summer timetable, freight traffic on May 29, 1987.
Later nostalgia trips were added in sections. Since 1996 the Rhön-Zügle has been traveling on the section from the museum station of the Franconian Open Air Museum Fladungen to Ostheim vor der Rhön and since 2000 on the entire route to Mellrichstadt, where there is a connection to the nationwide rail network.
The highlight of the museum railway is the restored, listed steam locomotive Gtl 4/4 with the DR road number 98 886, which is on loan from the city of Schweinfurt. It runs on selected days of the year, whereby the journeys are taken care of by the Rhön-Zügle eV association, which provides the train driver and other staff. Since 2011, the Erfurt Railway has been using a regional shuttle between Schweinfurt and Fladungen on certain days . From September 2014 Rhön-Zügle eV was able to put 89 7373, a rebuilt Prussian T 3 , into operation.
