Rhine promenade (Beuel)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The designed bank of the Rhine in Bonn - Beuel on the right bank of the Rhine between the Friedrich-Ebert-Brücke and the Bonner Bogen is called Rheinuferpromenade Beuel . Since the Rhine flood in 1993 , numerous construction measures have been carried out to prevent further flooding and to increase the recreational value of the banks of the Rhine. In the past few years, almost the entire promenade along a length of around 15 kilometers has been renewed, which has also made it possible to renew or improve the flood protection . On the one hand, the flood protection on the Beueler Promenade between Kennedy Bridge and the boathouse on Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Straße was renovated from October 2005 to mid-2011, thus upgrading the promenade. On the other hand, the Beuel Rhine dike between Friedrich-Ebert-Brücke and Kaiser-Konrad-Straße was strengthened and increased in 2010 and 2011.

In five and a half years, the renovation was carried out in five construction phases over a length of 1000 meters. As part of this measure, a flood protection height of 9.50 meters for the Bonn gauge was set in the entire area. In the course of the renovation / redesign, some existing elements of the promenade were repositioned, such as the Nepomuk monument and the flagpole of the Beueler Schifferverein. Others were completely relocated, such as the work of art Am Strom by the artist Robby Gebhardt, which was placed a little further south from its original location. The kiosk that used to be near the Rheinnixe passenger ferry has disappeared completely, as it could no longer be integrated .

The redesign created three new spaces on the promenade that can be used for events in a variety of ways. The first place, the roundabout on the Kennedy Bridge / China Ship, was equipped with an amphitheater- style seating system. At the second place, Nepomuk-Platz, a seating area invites you to linger. However, this was laid out in such a way that an unobstructed view of the Rhine is possible. The heart of the third square, at Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Straße, is a fountain. The fountain consists of a five-part basalt stele , is 2.50 meters high and has a diameter of approx. 80 centimeters. The three-ton stone stands in a well shell made of natural basalt stone paving and is surrounded by a semicircular steel pergola . The five steles of the fountain are intended to symbolize the five construction phases of the redesign.

In the area of this square there are also the so-called senior benches and the sun worshiper benches. The former are characterized by their higher seat surface and are equipped with arm and back rests. The latter are so spacious that sun worshipers can stretch out on them.

In addition to the special benches, there are also two action elements, a kaleidoscope and a turntable, which are intended to stimulate the senses. In order to use the newly created spaces, the promenade was connected to the existing paths at every cul-de-sac with staircases and handicapped accessible ramps. The entrances were also equipped with handrails and marked steps. The local associations were given the opportunity to present themselves at various points along the promenade. For example, information about the male and female bridges , but also about the Beuel city soldiers and the Bonn rowing society can be found on bronze plaques. The renovation in this area (2nd planning approval procedure from Marienstraße to Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Straße) cost around 6.35 million euros. The price also includes the vandal-proof waste bins. In addition, there are the costs for the first planning approval area, which is not mentioned here, from Wolfsgasse to Marienstraße, amounting to around 10.56 million euros. This area was built from 1993 to 1999.

Here the Rhine dike was renewed, strengthened and increased over a length of 2.4 kilometers . In this area there is now a flood protection up to a height of 11.18 meters Bonn level. The highest water levels in the last 100 years were reached in 1926 at 10.10 meters, in 1993 at 10.13 meters and in 1995 at 10.08 meters in Bonn. The dike is up to 12.18 meters high and has a four-meter-wide crest. The renovation began in spring 2010 and was completed at the end of August 2011. The renovation was carried out in three construction phases.

In the first construction phase, from the motorway exit to the Beuel sewage treatment plant , the dike was rebuilt over a length of 534 meters, being built as a relocated dike in the area between the Jewish cemetery and Niederkasseler Strasse and connected to the existing main dike between the sewage treatment plant and the Jewish cemetery has been. This was necessary in order to maintain the necessary distance to the drinking water supply line of the Wahnbachtalsperrenverband .

In the second construction phase, between the sewage treatment plant and the Vilicher Bach , the existing dike was demolished over a length of 316 meters and rebuilt. In this section, because of the sewage treatment plant, a retaining wall was built to secure the slope, which was crowned with a two meter high fence to enclose the plant.

In the third construction phase, from the Vilicher Bach to Kaiser-Konrad-Straße, the existing dike was stabilized with steel planks over a length of 1534 meters. The sheet piling projects where the Altdeich was not high enough, dressed up for a length of approximately one kilometer around 50 centimeters and was with concrete. The resulting wall, also known as "Beuel's longest bench", was lowered at the intersecting paths, for example on Wolfsgasse. Mobile elements can be installed here for protection. As part of the work, the existing flood protection gate on Bröltalbahnweg was not renewed; mobile protective elements are also used here if necessary.

For improved flood protection, 100,000 cubic meters of earth, gravel and clay were moved and 900 tons of steel were used for 8,000 square meters of sheet piling. In addition, 13,500 square meters of paths were laid out, 10,000 square meters of which are paved with asphalt. The costs for the new construction and the retrofitting amounted to 6.3 million euros (5.6 million euros for construction and 0.7 million euros for planning), of which the state of North Rhine-Westphalia assumed around 3.6 million euros.
