Family : South Pacific flounder
Scientific name
Rhombosoleidae
Regan , 1910

The South Pacific flounders (Rhombosoleidae) are a family of flatfish (Pleuronectiformes). All species of the Rhombosoleidae occur exclusively in the southern Pacific , around Australia and New Zealand . Two species of the genus Rhombosolea also swim up the rivers in New Zealand. The Rhombosoleidae are meaningless for fishing.

features

The ventral fins of the South Pacific flounder are asymmetrical, the one on the eye side can be fused with the anal fin . There is a well developed sideline on both sides . The number of vertebrae is from 30 to 46.

Systematics

The South Pacific flounder was established in 1910 by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan as the subfamily Rhombosoleinae of the plaice (Pleuronectidae). In more recent systems (e.g. Nelson 2006), however, they were increasingly given the status of an independent family. In the latest revision of the bony fish systematics , the southern flounder (Achiropsettidae) were synonymous with the Rhombosoleidae , so that the four monotypical genera of this family (not listed here) also belong to the Rhombosoleidae.

Genera and species

Colistium nudipinnis
Peltorhamphus novaezeelandiae
Psammodiscus ocellatus

Oncopterus darwinii , which was also part of the South Pacific flounders until the beginning of September 2019, is now the only species of the monotypical family Oncopteridae.
