Macroscopic features

Pattern of infestation of the willow scab ( Rhytisma salicinum ) in the conidial stage

The fruit body is about 2 to 5 mm wide and has a wrinkled surface. It consists of round, black and yellow-tinged stroma , which initially develop inside the leaves and bulge them up. In spring, straw-colored fruit slices mark the places where the leaves will later tear.

The colorless and slightly curved ascospores are 60–90 micrometers long and 1.5–3 micrometers wide. The cylindrical conidospores are 5 to 6 micrometers in length.
