Ribe Kommune (German: Kommune Ripen ) was a municipality in the Ribe Office in southwest Denmark .
The municipality was created on the occasion of the municipal reform in 1970 from the city of Ripen and its rural community as well as a total of 12 other rural communities: Hviding , Roagger and Spandet had previously belonged to the Tondern office and always belonged to North Schleswig . The island of Mandö has been closely associated with Ripe since the Middle Ages. Wester-Wittstedt , Seem , Obbekier , Fahrdrup , Kalslund and Hjortlund , split off from Hügum in 1864/86 , were divided between the Duchy of Schleswig and the Kingdom of Denmark until 1864 , but without clear borders. Vilslev belonged to the royal Jutland except for the southernmost districts, and only Jernved belonged fully to the kingdom. With the exception of the three first-mentioned municipalities, all had been in the Ripen office without restrictions since 1864.
In 2007, the municipality merged with the municipalities of Bramming and Esbjerg to form a new large municipality of Esbjerg with a population of over 100,000 . Denmark's oldest city lost its communal independence after more than 1000 years.
