Ribeira Grande de Santiago is a district ( concelho ) on the island of Santiago in the south of the Republic of Cape Verde .

Ribeira Grande de Santiago is located west of Praia . The neighboring municipality is Santa Catarina in the northwest, Santa Cruz in the north, São Domingos in the northeast and Praia in the east.

The district of Ribeira Grande de Santiago has only existed since 2005, when it was separated from the area of ​​the Praia district . The name comes from Portuguese and means "great river" or "river valley". This is the former name of the city of Cidade Velha , now the administrative seat of the district, and alludes to the great estuary on which the city was built.
