There he became a master student of Johannes Geccelli . In 1993 he received the Sprengel Prize for Fine Arts. From 1996 to 1998 Saro taught as “artist in residence” at the University of Witten-Herdecke . His work has been exhibited in numerous museums and art associations.

Saro's independent work began in the 1970s. As a student he developed his own existentially charged “ photo realism ”. In the period that followed, he increasingly dissolved representationalism until, in the 1980s, he came up with an image concept in which only color became the basis of the overall image effect. From then on, color was his artistic medium, which determines his work to this day. “Saro's pictures gain their very own visual language within 'color painting' primarily through their underlying understanding of color. He understands it not only as a purely visual phenomenon, but from the insight that the visibility of the color always contains a way to its spiritual-energetic potential ”. As early as 1993, Saro emphasized at a symposium on the concept of color: “You can also experience color physically. I've noticed that a picture is only ready for me when I not only perceive it visually, but when it suddenly flows through my body. It gets an energy that can not only be explained by the color ”. Saro's pictures emerge over a long period of time. Over many months, sometimes even years, layers of color are applied or removed until an unstable balance between opacity and transparency , delimitation and openness is created. Apparently monochrome and clearly structured color fields dissolve on longer viewing in favor of a variety of color phenomena. The painting of recent times makes this structure of the image from two or more fields back and sees the scene as a totality of color, without a stop by an outline. In Saro's own words: “Spontaneous and gestural patches of color reminiscent of abstract expressionism calm down as soon as you let the colors affect you. I don't want the gestures of this painting to be understood as an end in itself. I am more concerned with a movement in the picture that comes to rest in the color. For me the new works are moving and calm at the same time ”.
