The Weishaupt art gallery in Ulm houses a private collection of modern art in Baden-Württemberg . The building was opened on November 24, 2007 by the Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg Günther Oettinger after the work on setting up the exhibition had been completed .

Client

The owner and financier of this private art exhibition building is the entrepreneur and patron Siegfried Weishaupt , managing partner of the internationally operating Max Weishaupt GmbH with headquarters in Schwendi (Biberach district), which is one of the world market leaders in combustion technology , since 1982 . Weishaupt was also President of the Ulm Chamber of Commerce for several years .

architecture

The Kunsthalle Weishaupt was built for 10 million euros from 2005 to 2007 as part of a new building called " Ulm Neue Mitte " on Hans-und-Sophie-Scholl-Platz. The area in the city center was built on after the destruction caused by bombing in the Second World War with architecture and street aisles (Neue Strasse) that are now regarded as of little urban development value. The overall project “Neue Mitte Ulm”, the final point of which is the Kunsthalle Weishaupt, was one of the winners of the German Urban Development Prize 2006 (“Award” category). The Kunsthalle building was already taken into account in the award evaluation.

Weishaupt awarded the contract to design the art gallery directly to the architectural office of Wolfram Wöhr , Munich, who is a student of the New York architect Richard Meier , without a tender or competition . The design of the building in the vicinity of the minster , the town hall and the Ulm municipal museum and the glazed transition to the Ulm museum is controversial in parts of the Ulm public.

The land for the art gallery was provided by the city of Ulm, which also pays the staff for building maintenance. Weishaupt alone paid the construction costs. The entrance fees go to the city. According to the contract, the Kunsthalle will become the property of the city after 66 years.

Between 1989 and 1992, an award-winning building was built by Richard Meier on the Weishaupt factory premises in Schwendi, Upper Swabia, the “Weishaupt Forum” (social wing).

collection

Siegfried Weishaupt and his wife have been collecting modern art since 1967. The collection does not follow a given concept, but rather, according to Weishaupt, “always from the gut”. Initially only a few works from the Weishaupt collection were shown publicly, then a large part in the Center for Art and Media Technology in Karlsruhe, which opened at the end of 1999 .

The collection contains over 400 paintings and sculptures (not counting drawings, graphics and other works on paper), including important works of modern art from the 1950s and 1960s, e.g. B. by Roy Lichtenstein , Andy Warhol (who incidentally also portrayed company founder Max Weishaupt), Willem de Kooning , Keith Haring and Karl Gerstner . One focus is on major works of international color field painting from the 1960s, including by Mark Rothko , Ad Reinhardt , Frank Stella , Agnes Martin , Morris Louis and Kenneth Noland . It also contains works by the Düsseldorf artist group ZERO , including works by the founder Heinz Mack and Otto Piene , Günther Uecker , Pol Bury , as well as works by the artists Lucio Fontana , Piero Manzoni and Enrico Castellani who influenced this group . Another focus are pictures by the hard-edge artist Josef Albers . There are also examples of the work of Imi Knoebel and Günther Förg , Markus Oehlen , Robert Longo , Yves Klein , Barry Flanagan , John Armleder , Nam June Paik , Jean Tinguely , John Chamberlain , François Morellet , Maurizio Nannucci , Keith Sonnier , Hans Arp , Erich Hauser .

The “Weishaupt Collection” is one of the most important private collections of modern art in Baden-Württemberg alongside the collections of Frieder Burda , Reinhold Würth , Friedrich E. Rentschler (FER), Josef Froehlich and the Grässlin family , as well as the Ritter Museum .

The museum director is the client's daughter, the art historian Kathrin Weishaupt-Theopold . In the future, she will continue to develop the collection together with her father and present it with different thematic focuses.

The first show put together for the opening under the title “Simply See” showed a cross-section of the Weishaupt collection with around 70 works by 50 artists.
