Richard Andriamanjato

Richard Mahitsison Andriamanjato (born July 31, 1930 , † May 16, 2013 ) was a Malagasy Protestant pastor and communist politician .

Life

Andriamanjato came from a Protestant family. After attending an elementary school , he obtained his university entrance qualification and studied Protestant theology in France from 1950 to 1957 . After passing the exam, Andriamanjato was ordained pastor . In 1957 he took part in the Bandung Conference and became the leading figure of the part of the national movement opposite Philibert Tsiranana . Andriamanjato succeeded Pastor Ravelojaona as pastor at the Ambohitantely Temple in Antananarivo .

Andriamanjato became a member of the Council of the Protestant Federation of Madagascar . He was also elected President of the Council of Churches of Africa , was a member of the World Council of Churches in Geneva and a Director of the Christian Institute for Peace .

In 1958 he founded the Party of the Independent Congress of Madagascar (AKFM), which developed relations with the French Communist Party . It acted as the main opposition in the country for over a decade. In 1959 he was elected mayor of Antananarivo.

Andriamanjato supported Didier Ratsiraka in 1972 , and in 1976 he led the AKFM into the National Front for Defense of the Revolution , the ruling coalition. As a supporter of Albert Zafy , he separated from Ratsiraka and the AKFM in 1989 to form the Independent Congress of Madagascar / Renewal party . From 1991 to 1993 he was co-chairman of the Transitional Committee for Economic and Social Development together with Manandafy Rakotonirina . From 1993 to 1998 he was President of the National Assembly of Madagascar, In the presidential election in November 1996 took fifth place with 4.94% of the votes cast.

Since the 1960s Andriamanjato was a member of the Christian Peace Conference and took part in the II All-Christian Peace Assembly (ACFV) in Prague in 1964 . He was elected to their praesidium and was one of their vice-presidents. He gave several lectures, Bible studies and preached in their church services. At the V. ACFV 1978 he gave the main lecture on the topic of the conference: “God's call to solidarity - Christians for peace, justice and liberation”. a. positioned for a new economic order in the two-thirds world:

Andriamanjato withdrew from public life in the mid-1990s. His son Ny Hasina Andriamanjato is also a politician.
