Richard Arnell

Richard Anthony Sayer Arnell (born September 15, 1917 in Hampstead, London , † April 10, 2009 in Bromley , Kent ) was a British composer and conductor .

Life

Arnell studied from 1936 to 1939 at the Royal College of Music in London the subjects piano (with John Dykes) and composition (with John Ireland ). His now-forgotten Violin Concerto was premiered during his time at the Royal College . In 1941, his New Age overture premiered at Carnegie Hall , with which he established himself as a composer.

From 1943 to 1945 Arnell was musical advisor to the BBC and began teaching at Trinity College of Music in London in 1948 . In 1969/70 he was professor at Bowdoin College in Maine and then until 1972 visiting professor at Hofstra University in the USA. In 1972 he became musical advisor to the London Film School .

Richard Arnell also created some works for British and international cinema, including the music for the 1942 American documentary The Land by Robert J. Flaherty . In the 1960s, other compositions were made for the film. In 1964, in addition to Hans-Martin Majewski, he also wrote parts of the film music for the international co-production The Visit of the Austrian Director Bernhard Wicki with Ingrid Bergman and Anthony Quinn in the leading roles and also took over the direction. In 1967 he contributed the music for the British crime drama ... and Scotland Yard is silent with Van Heflin .
