Richard Brathwaite

Richard Brathwaite (* 1588 in Burnishead near Kendal ; † May 4, 1673 in Catterick / Richmondshire ; also in the spelling Brathwait , Braithwaite or Brathwayte ) was an English author of satires and humoresques . He appeared in his writings under the pseudonyms Corymbaeus, Parthenius Osiander, Musophilus, Dinonysius Baccho, Blasius Multibibus and Castalio Pomerano . He became famous during his lifetime for his humorous description of a pilgrim in England ( Barnaby's Four Journeys ). Today his Jus Potandi (Zechrecht), published in German in 1616, is particularly well known.

Life

Brathwaite came from a respected family from Burneside near Kendal. From 1604 he studied law at Oriel College, Oxford University, later also in Cambridge , and then worked as a lawyer in London. When his father died in 1610, he returned to Westmorland and published his poems and satires under several pseudonyms. It is believed that he took part in the English Civil War as captain of a foot company on the side of the royalists . In his homeland, he became a deputy lieutenant for Westmoreland, landowner and justice of the peace . He died in 1673 in the town of East Appleton, Catterick Township. In Catterick Church is the headstone of Brathwaites and his wife Mary, who died in 1681 and married in 1617. The inscription reads:

"Juxta sitae sunt / Richardi Braithwaite / De Burneshead, in comitat / e Westmorelandae armigeri, et / Mariae, ejus conjugis, Reliquiae. / Ille quarto die Maii, anno, 1673, / Donatus est; haec undecimo Aprilis 1681. / Supremum diem obiit. Horum filius / Unicus, Strafford Braithwaite, Eques / Auratus, adversus Mauros Christiani / Nominis hostes infestissimos, fortiter / Dimicans, occubuit. Cujus Cineres / Tingi in Mauritania Tingitana / Humantur./ Requiescant in Pace. "
