Richard Carew (knight)

Sir Richard Carew of Beddington (1469–23 May 1520 ) was an English knight .

Life

He came from the Carew family and was the son of James Carew and his wife Eleanor Hoo (* around 1450), daughter of Thomas Hoo, 1st Baron Hoo and Hastings († 1455).

He was the squire of Beddington Place in Beddington , Surrey , and served as the sheriff of Surrey.

He fought in the suppression of the Cornish Rebellion of 1497 at the Battle of Blackheath and was defeated to a Knight Bachelor after the Battle of King Henry VII in London .

Under Henry VIII. He fought in France, 1513 was commander of artillery at the siege of Tournai and was named after the Battle of Guinegate for Knight Banneret beaten. After the capture of Tournai he was appointed lieutenant of the fortress of Calais in 1513 .

After his death in 1520 he was buried in the Carew Chapel of St. Mary's Church in Beddington.

Marriage and offspring

In 1490 he married as their third husband Malyn (also Madgalen , † 1544), daughter of Sir Robert Oxenbridge, widow of Arthur Darcy and John Cheney. He had five children with her:

  • Sir Nicholas Carew (around 1496–1539)
  • Margaret Carew ⚭ John St. John (around 1495–1576)
  • Elizabeth Carew
  • Mary Carew ⚭ Sir William Pelham (1468-1538)
  • Anne Carew
