Richard Chandler

Richard Chandler [ ˈtʃɑːndlə ] (* 1738 in Elson , Hampshire ; † February 9, 1810 in Tilehurst , Berkshire ) was a British classical archaeologist .

Life

Chandler first attended Winchester College and later moved to Oxford University . There he studied first at Queen's College , then later at Magdalen College . At the latter he became a fellow and researched a. a. the antiquities collection of Thomas Howard, 21st Earl of Arundel . He carried on John Selden's research and on the basis of his Marmora Arundelliana Chandler was able to publish his Marmora Oxoniensia in 1763 .

On behalf of the Societät der Dilettanti , Chandler traveled to Ionia , Attica , Argolis and Elis in 1764 . On this research trip he was accompanied by the architect Nicholas Revett (1720–1804) and the painter William Pars (1742–1782). In 1766 the group returned to England with rich yield.
