Richard Nisbett

Richard Eugene Nisbett (born June 1, 1941 ) is an American psychologist . He is a professor at the University of Michigan .

Nisbett studied psychology at Tufts University ( AB , 1962) and received his PhD from Columbia University in 1966 . For the next five years he was an assistant professor at Yale University . Since 1971 he has been a professor at the University of Michigan. In 1992 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , and in 2002 to the National Academy of Sciences .

Nisbett's research focused on the thinking and reasoning of laypeople. Here he examined in particular cognitive distortions and the question of the extent to which these can be reduced through learning . Nisbett also examines cultural differences in thought processes.
