Richard Emil Kutterer (* July 15, 1904 ; † 2003 in Lörrach ) was a German physicist , engineer and university lecturer who researched in the field of ballistics .

Life

Kutterer studied physics at the Technical University in Berlin. He was an assistant at Carl Cranz from 1929 to 1934 and was awarded a Dr. Ing. PhD. From 1935 to 1945 he was a member of the government in the Army Weapons Office and was a specialist in small-caliber ballistics. After 1945 he continued his research at the Franco-German Research Institute (ISL) in Saint Louis . From 1959 he took on a teaching position at the Technical University of Karlsruhe in the field of space travel. From 1965 to 1969 he was the second German director of the Franco-German Research Institute (ISL) in Saint-Louis after Hubert Schardin (with whom he had already worked in Berlin under Cranz) and then Honorary Director for life.

From 1931 until her death in 1999 he was with the engineer Waltraude Kutterer geb. Harbort with whom he had several children. In addition to his academic work, Kutterer was active in local politics and, like his colleague Hubert Schardin, was an enthusiastic musician who promoted musical education in his future home town of Weil am Rhein .

With his monograph “Ballistics”, which was first published in 1942, Kutterer created, as his teacher Carl Cranz acknowledged in the forewords of the first and second editions, a strictly scientific and yet easily understandable textbook that appeared in 1959 in a greatly expanded third edition. The Kutterer is still - almost sixty years after the appearance of the third edition - an important standard work in the field of ballistics and is available as print-on-demand from Springer-Verlag .
