Richard Falbr (born September 29, 1940 in Chester , United Kingdom ) is a Czech politician and trade unionist . He was a member of the Czech Senate for the constituency of Most and was chairman of the Českomoravská konfederace odborových svazů . From 2004 to 2014 he was a member of the European Parliament .

Life

Richard Falbr was born during the Second World War in Chester, England, where his father was serving in a fighter squadron at the time , his mother was of Spanish origin. Richard Falbr lived in the United Kingdom until the end of the war, then the family briefly returned to Czechoslovakia before his father was sent to Venezuela as ambassador . Richard Falbr attended primary school here before the family returned to Czechoslovakia. He graduated from a business school with a focus on international relations. He later worked as an interpreter for the state-owned foreign trade company Strojimportu. During this time he completed a correspondence course at the Law Faculty of Charles University . He did his basic military service; He was also used as an interpreter for Cuban pilots who were stationed in Czechoslovakia. He then worked as a language teacher and for almost 20 years as a lawyer for the trade union federation.

He became a member of KSČ in 1968 , from which he was expelled a year later. After the Velvet Revolution he was approached to take part in the reform of the trade unions. He resigned and was elected chairman of the newly formed service union in 1990. In the following year he became deputy chairman of the Českomoravská konfederace odborových svazů , of which he was finally chairman from 1994 to 2002. In the years 1996-2004 he was a senator, initially independent and then supported by the ČSSD . He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the International Labor Organization . In 2004 he was elected to the European Parliament on the ČSSD list.

As an EU parliamentarian

Falbr is in the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists & Democrats in the European Parliament .

Falbr is a member of the Employment and Social Affairs Committee and a delegation to the EU-Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia Joint Parliamentary Committee . Falbr is deputy in the Committee for Regional Development and in the delegation in the committees for parliamentary cooperation EU-Armenia, EU-Azerbaijan and EU-Georgia and in the delegation in the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly .

family

Richard Falbr has been married to Věra Veselá since 1963. The marriage had two children, a daughter and a son. In his free time, Falbr devotes himself to ornithology and beekeeping .
