Richard Falckenberg

Friedrich Otto Richard Falckenberg (born December 23, 1851 in Magdeburg , † September 28, 1920 in Jena ) was a German historian of philosophy .

Life

Richard Falckenberg was a son of the Magdeburg sugar manufacturer Friedrich Otto Falckenberg (1815–1861). After his father's death, his widow moved with him to Dessau , where he attended high school. During this time he dealt with music as well as philosophy, eventually turning to the latter. In 1872 he obtained his university entrance qualification and enrolled at the University of Jena . In the further course of his studies, Falckenberg attended the universities of Leipzig , Halle , Erlangen and Göttingen .

In Jena he received his doctorate in philosophy in 1877. After his habilitation in 1880 he taught in Jena as a private lecturer . Seven years later he was made an extraordinary professor of philosophy . In 1889 Falckenberg was appointed full professor of philosophy at the University of Erlangen, where he taught until the end of his life. But he also remained connected to music and was well known in the city's music scene during his time in Erlangen. He died on September 28, 1920 in Jena at the age of 68.

In 1884 Falckenberg married the singer Else Pielke (1856–1934), a daughter of pastor Karl Pielke (1816–1894), in Dessau . The marriage had three sons, including the lawyer Robert Falckenberg and the Giessen mathematics professor Otto Richard Hans Falckenberg (1885-1946).

Act

Falckenberg has written an extensive work on the history of philosophy. His history of modern philosophy from Nikolaus von Kues to the present (first in 1886), which appeared several times in new versions, was widely distributed . This book, but also his academic teaching activities in Erlangen, had a strong impact on the history of philosophy studies. In doing so, he did not take up the truth of philosophy dogmatically , but historically, striving for harmony and justice. He belonged to a critical idealism . He also wrote six articles for the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie .
