Richard Ferrand (2008)

Richard Ferrand (born July 1, 1962 in Rodez , France ) is a French politician ( La République en Marche ). He has been President of the National Assembly since September 12, 2018 , of which he has been a member since 2012.

Political career

From 1980 Richard Ferrand was a member of the Parti socialiste . He exercised his first political mandate as a member of the Conseil général in the Finistère département between 1998 and 2011. From 2010 he was chairman of the socialist group in the Conseil regional of Brittany , in which he has lived for decades. From 1998 to 2012, Ferrand was the head of Mutuelles de Bretagne (Health Insurance Associations of Brittany).

In the 2012 parliamentary elections , he was elected to the National Assembly in his constituency in Finistère . There he was, among other things, a rapporteur on the liberalization laws proposed by Minister of Economic Affairs Emmanuel Macron ( Loi Macron ). He joined the En Marche (REM) movement founded by Emmanuel Macron in 2016 and became its general secretary in October 2016, after which he suspended his group chairmanship in the Regional Council of Brittany. After Macron's victory in the 2017 presidential election , he resigned from the Parti socialiste in May 2017 and organized En Marche's candidacy for the general election in June 2017 .

Ferrand was housing minister in the government of the newly elected President Macron from May 2017, but had to resign after a month after allegations of favoritism became known. From June 2017 he was parliamentary group leader of the REM in the National Assembly. As one of the few long-term experienced politicians from REM, he exercised the office with restraint, so that Le Parisien called him "the sad figure of the Macron era". On September 12, 2018, he was elected as the new President of the National Assembly, which aroused criticism due to the ongoing investigations against Ferrand and raised doubts as to whether Macron, who was under pressure due to unpopular decisions, could send a signal of change.

Investigations into favoritism

In May 2017, the weekly Le Canard enchaîné made public that the Mutuelles de Bretagne, which Ferrand ran at the time, had rented rooms from his partner in 2011, which led to criminal investigations into suspicion of favoritism.
