Richard Franz Kreutel
Richard Franz Kreutel (born May 2, 1916 in Vienna , † October 29, 1981 in Kabul ) was an Austrian Turkologist and ambassador .
Life
Richard Franz Kreutel graduated from high school in June 1935 and studied classical philology at the University of Vienna until September 1939 . He learned Turkish in Arabic script as an autodidact. During the Second World War he was used in the Battle of Stalingrad and in the Balkans. His unit used him to translate the news on Turkish radio. Sergeant Kreutel knew on February 23, 1945 that the Turkish government had declared war on the Greater German Reich .
After a brief period as a prisoner of war, he studied Oriental and Islamic Studies at the University of Vienna . In 1948 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on Evliya Çelebi , passed the examination as a sworn court interpreter for Turkish and became an assistant at the Oriental Institute of the University of Vienna. During this time he had three longer study visits to Turkey. In mid-1957, Kreutel joined the foreign service and was sent to the embassy in Tehran . In September 1959 he took over the management of the legation office in Kabul , where he was appointed chargé d'affaires in 1971 . From October 1979, the Austrian embassy in Kabul was the protective power for Swedish citizens in Afghanistan. In 1980 Kreutel was awarded the Great Medal of Honor of the City of Vienna for services to science and art. He died of a myocardial infarction .
