Richard Newton (artist)

Richard Newton (* 1948 in Oakland California ) is an American performance and video artist .

Life

Richard Newton was born in Oakland and lives in Pasadena , California. He holds a degree from the University of California, Irvine . He was known to Vija Celmins and Barbara Rose . Newton has shown artist books, films, videos, installations and performances. His one-of-a-kind books were shown at documenta 6 in Kassel in 1977 . Other well-known performances from 1977 are Touch a Penis and Smell a Vagina . Some performances took place in unusual locations such as the Public Spirit Festival behind a chained door in a dilapidated hotel in the city area. Get Under The Table, Don't Look at the Windows explores alcoholism, family ties, the infinite, and the nuclear threat.

For an exhibition at MoMA PS1 , Newton created a room-filling, lonely desert landscape made of trampled cans, broken beer bottles and slices of bread. The only sounds that broke the silence were the intermittent crying of a toddler and the yapping of a puppy.
