Barbara Rose (art historian)

Barbara Ellen Rose (* 1937 in Washington, DC ) is an American art historian , art critic, and publicist .

life and work

Barbara Rose studied at Smith College , Barnard College, and Columbia University . Julius Held and Meyer Schapiro were among their professors.

Rose was friends with Michael Chapman , met Carl Andre and Frank Stella and later belonged to the New York artist avant-garde . Frank Stella was married to her between 1961 and 1969. The couple chose Michael Fried as the godfather of their daughter, who was born in 1962 . In 1967 Stella was appointed to a professorship in California and Rose published American Art since 1900: a critical history .

Barbara Rose began teaching history of art at Sarah Lawrence College , Bronxville, NY and Yale University the following year . She settled for a while in Perugia , Italy in the villa Camerata di Todi .
