from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Riccardo I. Orsini (also: Ricardo Orsini ; German: Richard Orsini ) (* around 1230; † 1304 murdered in Clarentza before April 7th ) was Count Palatine of Kefalonia from 1264 until his violent death and Count of Gravina from 1284 to 1291 .

Life

Riccardo Orsini was born around 1230 as the son of Count Palatine Maio II Orsini and Anna (Theodora) Komnena Dukaina of Epirus . In 1264, after the death of his father, he became the new Count Palatine of Kefalonia and Zakynthos .

At this point in time, the Palatinate County was in a feudal relationship with the Principality of Achaia . Riccardo's liege lord Wilhelm II von Villehardouin , the prince of Achaia, had to submit to Charles of Anjou , the king of Naples , in the Treaty of Viterbo in 1267 after a defeat against the Byzantine empire of Nikaia . This indirectly also made Kefalonia a vassal of the Neapolitan Anjou .

From 1284 to 1291 Riccardo Orsini was entitled "Conte di Gravina" (Count of Gravina ). In 1286 he was appointed vicar general of Corfu , and in 1297 by Princess Isabelle de Villehardouin as Bailli of Achaia.

1304, before April 7th, Riccardo Orsini was murdered in Clarentza by one of his own knights.

His son Johannes (Giovanni) from his first marriage, lord of Leukas since 1295 , succeeded him as Johannes I. Orsini .
