Richard Roll

Richard Roll (born October 31, 1939 ) is an American economist and university professor .

Career, research and teaching

Roll first studied aerospace engineering at Auburn University , which he left with a bachelor's degree in 1961 . He then worked for Boeing in Seattle . He graduated from the University of Washington there in 1963 as an MBA . He completed his Ph.D. at the Graduate School of Business at the University of Chicago by 1968. -Education. His thesis, published under the title "The Behavior of Interest Rates: An Application of the Efficient Market Model to US Treasury Bills", was awarded the 1969 Irving Fisher Prize for the best dissertation in economics.

After completing his training, Roll held a position as an assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon University . In 1973 he moved to Brussels as a professor at the European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management before moving on to the Institut supérieur des affaires in Jouy-en-Josas near Paris in 1975 . He returned to his home country a year later and joined the Faculty of Economics at UCLA . In addition to his academic work, he also worked as a consultant and in the banking sector. He was also involved in various scientific organizations. In 1987 he was the successor to the later Nobel Prize winner Robert Carhart Merton of the American Finance Association as President.

Roll's academic focus is on portfolio theory , investment management and company valuation . He has co-authored numerous publications by award-winning scientists such as Nobel Laureate Eugene Fama , Michael Jensen , Stephen Ross and Kenneth French .
