Richard of Saint-Laurent , lat. Richardus de Sancto Laurentio (* in the 12th or 13th century probably in Mesnil-Saint-Laurent , Aisne , † after 1254 ) was a French canons , Penitentiary and archdeacon in Rouen and pen dean of Notre -Lady des Andelys in Les Andelys . The most important writing attributed to him is the mariological treatise De laudibus beatae Mariae .

Life

Apart from the offices Richard held, nothing is known about his life. The Archbishop of Rouen Eudes Rigaud noted in his report on the visit to the Collegiate Monastery of Notre-Dame in Grand-Andely on October 3, 1254, reproachfully, that "Magister Ricardus" did not live in the monastery, although neither teaching nor pilgrimage prevented him. Richard was buried in the collegiate church and received an elaborate tombstone.

The Book of Mary

The book of Mary De laudibus beatae Mariae ("About the honorary title of the Blessed Mary") is a learned typological - allegorical interpretation of innumerable biblical names and images that relate to Mary and her role in the divine plan of salvation, with an emphasis on the Song of Songs .

The book does not have an author's name in the older manuscripts. Since the end of the Middle Ages it has been used as the work of St. Albertus Magnus and was highly regarded. But as early as the 17th century, various authors suggested that Richard von Saint-Laurent was the author. Richard's epitaph in the collegiate church of Les Andelys, which had long served there face down as a portal threshold and was only rediscovered in its meaning in the late 19th century, is definitive evidence. The vertical inscription reads:

Hic iacet magister Ricardus de Sancto Laurentio decanus huius ecclesiae qui compilavit librum de laudibus beatae Mariae. Orate per eo.
“Here rests Magister Richard de Saint-Laurent, dean of this church, who compiled the book on the honorary titles of Blessed Mary. Pray for him. "
